F-Secure releases its year-end online security roundup

The amount of malware detected in the year 2007 equals the amount detected in the last 20 years combined, according to F-Secure. There were close to a quarter of a million detections in total at the beginning of 2007, whereas the figure stands at close to half a million now. Malware authors have been producing variants in bulk. Genuine innovation appeared to be on the decline, being replaced instead with volume and mass-produced kit malware. But while new techniques weren’t developed, existing techniques were defined and adapted for much greater effectiveness. Some of the major security threats that hit the internet 1007 were:

a) The storm Botnet
b) Trojans stealing passwords through online games
c) Fake video codecs and DNS changers
