Virtual Lunar Trip

What do you get when a legendary aerospace giant joins hands with a leader in the Internet space? Satellites beaming images to the internet? Images of dying stars, fly-by views of planet rings, panoramic views of planetary surfaces? Perhaps webcasts beamed live from the International Space Station (ISS).

The two companies, NASA and Google, have been discussing an R&D alliance since 2005. They have finally outlined their joint projects. With Google's help, NASA plans to make its rich content available over the Internet. According to NASA, soon there will be Google Earth Flyovers available for the surfaces of Mars and the moon. We can also expect real-time weather forecasting and visualization, as well as tracking of the ISS and space shuttle activity.

Joint projects in the future will go beyond melding NASA data into Google application. Other planned projects deal with human-computer interaction, education-related collaborations and possibly even joint missions.
