Sony & Microsoft announces support for DIVX video in their consoles

In a surprising move, both Sony and Microsoft announced that their gaming consoles PS3 and Xbox 360 respectively, would support the playback of compressed DivX video.DivX has long been a format favored by enthusiasts and movie pirates because of its high quality, small file sizes and lack of digital copy protection hassles.

Both Sony and Microsoft now seem to have realized that consumers demand seamless, trouble free media experiences. Both want to make inroads into customers’ living rooms, which will be difficult to achieve if they force users to convert their video files into esoteric formats and deal with copy-protection error messages.
